Improve My Game Jam Devlog
I submitted “Sealed Museum” to GoedWare Jam last month. Despite having to cut some plot, characters and corners in general, I liked how it came out, though was looking forward to polishing after the jam. Improve My Game Jam gave me a good opportunity to polish, especially since I like the idea of creating more games in the same setting with clue and info trading based mystery solving and would appreciate getting feedback on what works and what could be improved. At this point, there are still some parts that are not implemented, like letting the player ask suspects questions about clues from the clue menu, like I have set up for the info menu, but the game full and playable with no major bugs (that I'm aware of).
Some improvements I was able to make:
- Fixing the spot on the wall where you find the painting so that the event will not replay a second time if you interact with it again.
- Fixing info trading so that you can only run the event for each piece of info once.
- Adding conditions that stop the player being able to collect the same clue multiple times and have, for example, 3 statements that the basement was flooded.
- Added a system that tells you how many clues you found out of the total number of clues each time you find a new clue to give a sense of progression and let the player know when they found everything.
- Put something interesting and relevant in the bathroom trashcan since the one in the street was subtlety encouraging you to check trashcans, yet the others were all empty.
- Added another another question from the chief in his final questioning about how the culprit would be getting money from stealing the painting (black market, insurance fraud, neither) because the clues had hinted about the motive and a comment from the janitor suggested insurance fraud, though a clue ruled that out because the painting was not yet insured.
- Did a lot of minor edits and improvements to dialog.
